Restored reading centre gives Alligator Pond children a safe place to learn
The reading centre at Alligator Pond Primary in Alligator Pond, St Elizabeth, has been restored and will provide a safe and conducive learning environment for over 200 children.
The centre was severely damaged after Hurricane Melissa, which struck the island in November 2022, and left many schools in the parish without functioning classrooms. The project was undertaken by the Sandals Foundation, a local charity, and its partners, in a collaboration with the Government.
The centre was built in 2003 and had been used by the school for over 15 years before the hurricane. After the storm, the building was found to be in a state of disrepair, with damage to the roof and walls.
The Sandals Foundation led the $214-million restoration project, which was designed to not only repair the building but also to provide the school with a safe and modern learning environment.
The centre was officially reopened in May 2024, and it is now equipped with modern furniture and equipment, including computers and educational materials. The school’s headteacher, Mr. Anderson, expressed his gratitude to the Sandals Foundation and its partners for their efforts in restoring the centre.
